The Story Behind a French Icon: Why We Love Duralex Glassware

Some products earn their place on our shelves because everything about them aligns with our own values. Duralex glasses are one of those brands, and once you know the story behind them, it's easy to understand why we love them.

French Iconic Glassware

Duralex has been producing glassware in La Chapelle-Saint-Mesmin, in the Loire Valley of France, since the 1940s. Over seven decades of craft, in a single factory, with around 99% of materials sourced close to the factory gates. Everything is made on site, with a depth of knowledge that comes from doing one thing, in one place, for a very long time.

The Picardie tumbler, with its instantly recognisable tapered shape and subtle ribbed texture, has been on tables across France since the 1950s. You'll find it in Parisian cafés, school canteens and family kitchens alike. A design so quietly perfect that 70 years have gone by and no reason has yet been found to change it.

Sustainable Glassware Built to Last

Duralex uses soda-lime glass made from sand, soda ash and limestone, which is fully recyclable. Glass waste is recycled back into production, reducing both material waste and the energy required for melting, with modern furnace investment and fume filtration completing a genuinely considered approach to manufacturing. The most sustainable thing about Duralex glassware, however, is its longevity. Glassware you replace every couple of years generates far more waste than glassware you buy once and keep for a decade, and Duralex is very much the latter.

Tempered Glass That Takes Daily Life in Its Stride

What sets Duralex apart technically is the tempering process. Every piece is treated to make it significantly stronger than standard glass, more resistant to chips, thermal shock, and the kind of impacts that come with daily use in a busy kitchen or family home. The glassware handles temperature changes of up to 130°C, making it suitable for hot drinks, cold drinks, microwave use and freezer storage. When it does eventually break, and it takes considerably more effort than you'd expect, it shatters into small blunt pieces rather than dangerous shards. Lead-free and cadmium-free throughout, and thoughtfully engineered in a way you only fully appreciate when you compare it with everything else.

Employee-Owned and Ethically Made

In July 2024, Duralex became a SCOP, a Société Coopérative et Participative, a worker-owned cooperative where the employees have a direct stake in the business. The transition secured jobs, restored confidence among staff, and put the future of the factory in the hands of the people who know it best. EU manufacturing standards mean fair pay and proper working conditions are guaranteed throughout. When you buy Duralex, you're supporting a workers' cooperative with over seven decades of craft behind it, and that matters to us when we decide what sits on our shelves.

The Duralex Range at Kelvin Rooms

We stock a small, carefully chosen selection from the Duralex range, each piece carrying that same unmistakable retro French character.

For example, the Picardie Glass Tumbler, which is the original French drink tumbler. 250ml, available in four colours, stackable and genuinely versatile, it moves as easily from water to wine to something stronger as it does from a kitchen shelf to a café table.

The Classic Duralex Glass Mug brings the same retro feel and quality to your morning coffee or tea. Crystal clear tempered glass with a comfortable handle, 260ml capacity, and a quietly elegant design that feels at home anywhere from a professional kitchen to a breakfast table.

The Gigone Glass Tumbler is the middle sibling of the family; quietly iconic, perfect for families, for juice, coffee, or any shorter drink. A toughened glass construction, a fully stackable design, and every bit as durable as the larger pieces.

The Duralex Lys Side Plate brings the Duralex approach to the table in a different way entirely. Crystal-clear tempered glass in a relaxed, minimal design that works beautifully as a dessert plate, a side plate or a serving dish, and is dishwasher, microwave and freezer-safe throughout.
