Multi Sparkle Cheena Bauble

This bauble is mouth-blown in India for Arthur Cameron, the company behind Bollywood Christmas, which designs its decorations and has them made by hand by artisans across the country. It measures about 8cm across.

Mouth-blowing begins with a gather of molten glass on the end of a hollow pipe, which the glassblower inflates by breath and turns into a sphere. While the surface of this bauble is still hot, it is rolled through a mosaic of coloured and reflective glass chips. The chips melt partly into the body of the glass and partly keep their edges, so the surface catches light at many different angles. Since each chip settles where it falls, the pattern and spread of colour differ from one bauble to the next.

We chose it for the way the chips throw candlelight and fairy lights back from every side of the tree.

How to Care for a Glass Bauble

Hang the bauble from a firm, well-supported branch, since mouth-blown glass is thin and will break if it falls onto a hard floor. Dust it with a soft, dry brush, which passes over the raised chips without catching on them. At the end of the season, wrap it in tissue and store it in a rigid box, where it is protected from the weight of other decorations.
