Françoise founded Les Belles Vagabondes in September 2018, after a graphic design career and a period working in Africa. Marushka in green is one of the mini scarves that came out of it: 50 x 50cm of pure silk, drawn by hand in France and printed by hand in India.
It is worn at the neck, round a wrist, as a headband, through a bun, or tied to a bag handle.
How the Printing Works
Traditional screen printing needs one frame per colour. A stencil of micro-perforated fabric is stretched over a flat frame and each colour pushed through in turn, the layers superimposed until the design appears. The colours themselves are blended in the workshop from powdered dyes and natural gums, from a palette of more than 500 shades: cherry, Mediterranean blue, olive green and a great many more.
The printing tables run to 36 metres, long enough to lay out 450 mini scarves at once. Each is then cut by hand and given a French-style hand-rolled hem.
How This Scarf Is Made
The workshop is a SEDEX member, audited under the SMETA framework covering labour rights, health and safety, environmental practice and business ethics. Dyes are AZO-free and contain no heavy metals or hazardous chemicals.
How to Care for Your Silk
Hand wash cool with a mild detergent, or dry clean. Blot rather than wring. Dry away from direct heat and light, and if it needs pressing, use a cool iron on the reverse while the silk is still faintly damp.
