Les Belles Vagabondes refuse digital printing. Everything is screen printed by hand in India, a slower method chosen because it holds colour with more nuance than a digital press can manage. Marushka in grey is one of the mini scarves, 50 x 50cm of pure silk.
It is a small square, made to be worn rather than kept: at the neck, on a wrist, in the hair, or knotted through a bag handle.
How the Printing Works
Screen printing means one frame per colour. A stencil of micro-perforated fabric is stretched over a flat frame, and each colour is pushed through in turn, layer over layer, until the design is complete. The dye colours are blended by hand from powders and natural gums, with more than 500 shades in the workshop palette.
The printing tables run to 36 metres. Once the fabric is printed and processed, each scarf is cut by hand and given a French-style hand-rolled hem.
How This Scarf Is Made
The printing workshop belongs to SEDEX, the Supplier Ethical Data Exchange, and is audited under SMETA, which assesses labour rights, health and safety, environmental practice and business ethics. Dyes are AZO-free and contain no heavy metals or hazardous chemicals.
How to Care for Your Silk
Hand wash cool with a mild detergent, or dry clean. Blot the water out in a towel rather than wringing. Dry away from direct heat and sunlight, and press with a cool iron on the reverse while the silk is still slightly damp if it needs it.
