This garland carries ten die-cut and embossed figures of Father Christmas, each carrying a Christmas tree and a sack of presents, strung along three metres. It is made by Mamelok, a paper house that began in Breslau, now Wrocław, in the first half of the nineteenth century.
Embossing raises each figure from the card so that light catches the folds of the coat and the edges of the sack, the same technique used on the Victorian scraps that were pasted into albums and onto screens. Each motif measures around 196mm, and the garland is finished by hand in the UK.
Hanging and Storing a Paper Garland
Hang the garland away from candles, fires and radiators, as dry heat makes card brittle and curls the embossed edges. After Christmas, lay it flat in a box between sheets of tissue so that the relief is not crushed, and keep it somewhere dry for next year.
Length: approx. 3m
Motifs: 10, approx. 196mm each
Material: die-cut, embossed card
Made in: UK
