This wand is carved by hand in Bali from raintree wood. It comes to us through Siesta, a Canterbury Fair Trade importer and a member of BAFTS, the British Association for Fair Trade Shops and Suppliers.
Raintree, known in Bali as suar, is a broad, fast-growing shade tree whose timber is carved across the island into bowls, boards and small figures. The wood has a golden-brown heartwood edged with paler sapwood, and the grain runs visibly along the length of each wand, so no two are marked alike.
The wand has long been the conjuror's tool in folklore and stage magic, and this one is made to be carried with a costume at Halloween or kept on a shelf through the rest of the year.
Carved wood responds to handling. Over time the wood darkens where the hand grips it, and the grain along the handle takes on a soft shine from repeated use, until the wand carries the marks of the hands that have held it. That change is the reason to choose carved wood.
How to Care for a Carved Wooden Wand
Keep the wand dry and away from radiators and direct sunlight, since rapid changes in heat and humidity can open fine cracks along the grain. If the surface begins to look dry, rub in a small amount of beeswax with a soft cloth and buff away the excess, which feeds the wood and deepens its colour. Remove dust with a dry cloth, as water can raise the grain.
Material: raintree (suar) wood
