Large Italian Leather Coin Purse

Montte di Jinne have worked with Italian leather artisans since 2010. Their coin purses are crafted by hand in genuine Italian leather, in small batches and in a handful of well-chosen colours, and this is the larger of the two sizes we stock.

Beneath the snap closure sit three compartments, one of them zipped. The extra width across the body allows cards to lie flat alongside folded notes, with coins kept apart in the zipped section, so the purse serves as a slim wallet as well as a change purse. The interior has been left unlined, which reveals the reverse of the leather and keeps the purse thin enough to carry in a jacket pocket.

Grain, thickness and depth of colour vary across a single hide, so one purse differs a little from the next. In time the leather darkens at the corners and takes on a shine where fingers return to the same places, until the purse holds a quiet record of the years it has been carried. That patina is the whole pleasure of leather, and it is why we stock it.

Available in red plum, dark chocolate and black. The shades change with each delivery, so a colour on the shelf this month may not be there the next.

How to Care for Your Leather

Very little is required to keep leather in good order, and most of it comes down to avoiding damp and direct heat. Should the purse get wet, blot it with a dry cloth and leave it to dry at room temperature; leather dried too quickly, on a radiator or in strong sunlight, loses moisture from the fibres and hardens at the surface.

Dust settles into the grain over time and lifts away with a barely damp cloth. A neutral conditioner, worked in once or twice a year, will keep the surface supple and slow the drying that comes with age. Cards carried flat will press their outline into an unlined purse after a while, which is characteristic of leather this soft.
