The Mary Queen of Scots Frog Greetings Card is an A6 card from Ezen Designs, printed on pearlescent paper and produced in their London studio, in which their frog takes on the part of Mary Queen of Scots in a contemporary adaptation of a Japanese woodblock print dating from 1814.
Ezen's frogs all begin in Edo-period woodblock prints, and each card in the collection gives the frog a different character, from scientists and sailors to, here, Scotland's most famous queen. The reverse of the card explains the idea behind them: the Japanese word for frog, kaeru, can also mean “to return”, so in Japan the frog is thought to bring good luck, representing good things returning. A trivia fact is printed on the back as well.
The pearlescent finish gives the card a soft shimmer that suits a royal subject, and it makes a lovely card for anyone with a love of Scottish history, or for a friend who has moved away from Scotland and might one day come home.
We stock the Ezen frogs because they are designed and produced in the studio's own premises in London, and this one, with its nod to Scotland, has a particular place on our racks in Glasgow.
Keeping the Card at Its Best
Keep it in its wrapping until you are ready to write it, because pearlescent paper picks up fingermarks quite easily. Once it is up on display, a spot out of direct sunlight will stop the colours from fading.
