This crescent moon is hand carved from acacia wood in northern Thailand, with a smiling face carved into it. At 3cm deep, it is a substantial piece for its size.
Acacia is a dense hardwood with a pronounced grain that runs in bands of honey and darker brown. The carving is imported by Siesta, a Canterbury Fair Trade business and a member of BAFTS, the British Association for Fair Trade Shops and Suppliers.
With time and light, acacia deepens in colour, and the raised features of the face, which the hand finds most often, take on a soft sheen. A carving like this improves for being handled and kept, and that is much of its appeal.
Caring for Acacia Wood
Dust with a dry cloth, and keep the carving away from radiators and damp walls, as sudden changes in humidity can cause acacia to split along the grain. Once or twice a year, a thin coat of beeswax polish, buffed off after a few minutes, will feed the wood and bring up the grain.
Material: acacia wood
Dimensions: 14 × 20 × 3cm
