The Scotia Scotland Map Letterpress Greeting Card is printed in Glasgow by The Passenger Press, on paper milled in the UK, with a reproduction of John Adair's 1703 map, A True and Exact Hydrographical Description of the Sea Coast and Isles of Scotland. It belongs to the press's Keyhole Collection, and a QR code on the back links to the story of the map.

Adair spent years surveying Scotland's coasts and islands at the end of the seventeenth century, and his charts are among the treasures of Scottish mapmaking. Rhian Nicholas prints the card by hand in small batches on her vintage letterpresses in her studio and shop in Glasgow, so the fine lines of the coastline sit slightly into the card.

Each batch is inked by hand, so there are slight variations in colour from card to card. It comes with a brown kraft envelope and makes a lovely card for anyone who sails, walks the islands, or has a soft spot for old maps.

We stock it because it is a piece of Scotland's own history, printed in Glasgow by a Glasgow press.

Protecting the Print

Keep the card in its envelope until you send it, as the fine detail of the map shows scuffs more than a bolder design would. On a mantelpiece, keep it clear of direct sun so the ink stays crisp.
