Teardrop Christmas Decoration

This teardrop Christmas decoration is shaped from papier mâché in Kashmir and painted by hand in blue, purple, red or green with gold. Its long, tapering shape hangs well between round baubles.

The papier mâché is built from paper pulp, dried hard and smoothed before it is painted, so each teardrop is finished a little differently. The craft has been practised in Kashmir since the fifteenth century, when artisans from Persia brought it to the valley.

Looking After Your Teardrop Decoration

Dust it with a soft brush and keep it away from moisture, as the paper beneath the paint softens when wet.
