Linen Church Candle, Nordic Swan Ecolabel

This church candle is made from stearin with a small proportion of paraffin, ninety to ten, in a subdued linen colour, and it carries the Nordic Swan Ecolabel, the official environmental label of the Nordic countries. It stands 10cm high and 9.6cm across and is designed by ib laursen of Denmark.

Stearin is a hard wax made from plant or animal fats, and it burns more slowly than paraffin alone, which is why it has long been used for church and pillar candles. Manufactured within the EU, where labour law sets minimum standards for pay, working conditions, and holiday entitlement.

Burning a Pillar Candle Well

On first lighting, let the candle burn until the melted pool almost reaches the edge, so that it does not tunnel down the centre on later burns. Trim the wick to about 1cm each time, keep the candle out of draughts, and never leave it burning unattended.
