Ginger Cat Christmas Decoration

This ginger cat Christmas decoration is made from papier mâché and painted by hand in Kashmir, in warm orange and golden tones with a bright, expressive face. At around 5cm, it is small enough to tuck among the branches of a tree, and just as good hanging from a lamp or a mirror all year.

The cat is shaped from paper pulp, dried hard and then painted freehand, which gives every one its own markings and its own particular look. Papier mâché has been made in Kashmir since the fifteenth century, and the detail on a decoration this size depends entirely on a fine brush and a steady hand.

Looking After Your Papier Mâché Cat

A soft, dry brush is the best way to dust it. Papier mâché is made of paper beneath the paint, so keep it away from steam and spills, and store it in tissue somewhere dry once the decorations come down.
