Milagro Hand Decoration

This milagro hand decoration is handmade in India with an antique finish, and is made to hang on the Christmas tree or from a nail on the wall. It draws on the Latin American tradition of milagros, small metal charms left at shrines and churches. “Milagro” means “miracle” in Spanish, and in that tradition the hand stands for protection, blessing and healing.

Milagros are traditionally pressed or cast in tin, brass or silver, and each shape refers to what a prayer concerns, so a heart, a pair of eyes, a leg or a hand each carries its own meaning. Hung on a tree, a milagro brings something of that devotional folk art to Christmas, and it can stay on the wall long after the tree has gone.

The aged finish is part of its look, and slight differences in tone from piece to piece come from it being made by hand. We source these from a supplier who works directly with the craftspeople in India who make them.

Looking After Your Milagro

Dust it with a dry cloth and leave the patina alone, since polishing would strip away the antique finish that gives it its character. Keep it somewhere dry, where damp won't mark the metal.
