Twice a year Françoise, the designer behind Les Belles Vagabondes, draws five new designs. Each one is then produced in six to eight colourways, which is how a single motif such as Agami arrives in combinations as different as mint and coral.
This mini scarf is 50 x 50cm of pure silk with a hand-rolled hem. It is small enough to be useful: at the neck, round a wrist, holding back hair, or tied to a bag handle.
How the Printing Works
The scarves are screen printed by hand in India. The technique needs a separate frame for every colour in the design, and the layers are superimposed one over another to build the image. Colours are mixed on site from powdered dyes and natural gums, drawn from a working palette of over 500 shades.
After printing, each scarf is cut by hand and hemmed in the French style, the edge rolled and stitched by hand rather than machined flat. It is slow work and it is what gives the border its slight weight.
How This Scarf Is Made
Les Belles Vagabondes prints with a workshop that is a member of SEDEX, the Supplier Ethical Data Exchange, audited under the SMETA framework across labour rights, health and safety, environmental practice and business ethics. The dyes are AZO-free, free of heavy metals and hazardous chemicals. The brand uses no synthetic fibres.
How to Care for Your Silk
Wash by hand in cool water with a gentle detergent, or have it dry cleaned. Do not wring it out: silk fibres stretch when wet and will not entirely recover. Roll it in a towel instead, then dry it flat away from heat and sunlight.
