Mini Mandalay Blue Silk Scarf

Mandalay in blue is a mini scarf from Les Belles Vagabondes, 50 x 50cm of pure silk. The design is one of five Françoise draws each season, and like all of them it exists in several colourways, so the same motif can read quite differently depending on the palette it is printed in.

It ties at the neck, sits on a wrist, holds back hair, or knots onto a bag handle.

How the Printing Works

The scarf is screen printed by hand in India rather than digitally. Each colour in the design needs its own frame and its own pass, the layers superimposed to build the image. Colours are blended in the workshop from powdered dyes and natural gums, chosen from a palette of over 500 shades.

Once printed and processed, the fabric is cut by hand and finished with a French-style hand-rolled hem, which is stitched by hand along all four edges.

How This Scarf Is Made

The printing workshop is a member of SEDEX, the Supplier Ethical Data Exchange, and is audited under the SMETA framework, covering labour rights, health and safety, environmental practice and business ethics. The dyes are AZO-free, containing no heavy metals or hazardous chemicals.

How to Care for Your Silk

Hand wash in cool water with a mild detergent, or dry clean. Press the water out gently in a towel: silk stretches when wet and will hold the distortion. Dry flat, away from radiators and sunlight.
