The Vely Soapery make their soap in small batches by the traditional cold-process method, hand-blending oils and butters and leaving the bars to cure for several weeks before they are sold. Cold-processing keeps the natural glycerin in the bar rather than removing it, which is what gives a handmade soap its softer feel against the skin.
Black Rose is coloured with activated charcoal, which gives the bar its deep black colour. The oil base is olive oil and shea butter, both conditioning, and the bar is scented with rose geranium, cinnamon and black pepper essential oils. The result is spicy and sweet at once, warmer than a floral soap and less sharp than a citrus one.
Scent, colour and texture all come from essential oils, clays and botanicals. There are no fragrance oils, synthetic colourants or artificial additives in the bar, and it is made without palm oil.
The rope is threaded through the bar so it can hang from a shower rail or a hook, which keeps it out of standing water and lets it dry between uses. A soap left sitting in a wet dish softens and disappears far faster than one allowed to drain. The soap arrives in plastic-free packaging.
How to Care for Your Soap
Hang the bar up after use rather than leaving it flat in a dish. Soap dissolves wherever water sits against it, so a bar that drains freely will last considerably longer than one that does not. If you do keep it in a dish, choose a draining one and pour off any water that collects.
Store any spare bars somewhere dry and airy, out of direct sunlight. Essential oils fade with light and warmth over time, so a cupboard suits them better than a windowsill. Unwrapped bars will go on curing gently in storage, which hardens them further and makes them last longer still.
