This vessel is hand-formed in Oaxaca, Mexico, in barro negro, the region's black clay. It is fired in a pit with little oxygen, which turns the clay black without glaze or paint, and then polished. The pottery is made around San Bartolo Coyotepec, just south of Oaxaca city, and each piece varies in tone and shape.

Looking After Barro Negro

It is for display only, as the unglazed clay isn't watertight. Dust it with a dry cloth.
