Sailor Hoji Frog Greetings Card

The Sailor Hoji Frog Greetings Card is an A6 card from Ezen Designs, printed on pearlescent paper and produced in their London studio, with a contemporary sailor version of their frog adapted from an antique Japanese woodblock print of 1814.

Ezen take their frogs from Japanese woodblock prints of the Edo period and give each one a new occupation, and the reverse of the card explains the idea behind them. The Japanese word for frog, kaeru, can also mean “to return”, and so in Japan the frog is considered lucky, a symbol of good things coming back. Each card also carries a trivia fact on the back.

The pearlescent paper gives the card a soft sheen in the light. It makes a good card for someone in the navy, a keen sailor or anyone setting off on a voyage, given what the frog stands for.

We stock the Hoji frogs because they are designed and produced by Ezen in their own studio in London.

Keeping Your Card Pristine

Leave the card in its wrapping until you write it, as a pearlescent surface shows fingermarks more readily than matt paper. Stand it out of direct sunlight once it's displayed so the colours stay true.
