This card reproduces an illustration from The History of Mother Shipton, an eighteenth-century chapbook reprinted by John Ashton in Chap-books of the Eighteenth Century in 1882. It is published by The Pattern Book and printed in England.
Chapbooks were small, cheaply printed booklets sold by travelling pedlars, and they carried ballads, fortunes and tales of the supernatural to readers across Britain. Mother Shipton was the best known of their witches: a prophetess said to have lived in a cave beside the River Nidd at Knaresborough in Yorkshire in the sixteenth century, whose predictions were printed and reprinted for centuries.
The card is printed on light cream 300gsm Italian paper made from 100% recycled post-consumer waste. It comes with a 110gsm kraft envelope, also 100% recycled, in a plant-based wrapper, and it is blank inside.
Size: 170 × 120mm
Paper: 300gsm, 100% recycled
Inside: blank
Printed in: England
