The Camelia Marine is one of Les Belles Vagabondes' bandeaux, a long narrow band of pure silk measuring 8 x 150cm. The length is what makes it useful: it can be worn in the hair, tied at the neck, threaded through belt loops, wound round a wrist, or knotted onto the handle of a bag.
How the Printing Works
The bandeaux are screen printed by hand in India rather than digitally. Screen printing requires a separate frame for each colour, with the layers superimposed one over another to build the finished design, and it holds colour with more depth and variation than a digital press. Shades are blended in the workshop from powdered dyes and natural gums, out of a palette of more than 500 colours.
Printing runs on tables between 24 and 36 metres long. Each piece is then cut by hand and finished by hand along its edges.
How This Scarf Is Made
The printing workshop is a member of SEDEX, the Supplier Ethical Data Exchange, and is audited under the SMETA framework, which assesses labour rights, health and safety, environmental practice and business ethics across the supply chain. The dyes are AZO-free, containing no heavy metals or hazardous chemicals. The brand refuses synthetics, working only in silk, wool and organic cotton.
How to Care for Your Silk
Hand wash in cool water with a mild detergent, or have it dry cleaned. Silk is weaker wet than dry, so press the water out in a towel rather than wringing, which stretches the fibres out of shape along the length. Dry away from radiators and direct sun.
