This bookmark is designed by Book Ephemera, a small business in Norwich that makes bookmarks in the form of the papers that pass through the hands of characters in well-known novels. This one is a cargo receipt for the Demeter, the Russian schooner that carries Count Dracula from Varna on the Black Sea to Whitby in Bram Stoker's novel of 1897.
The receipt is printed on pale pink card under the heading Demeter Private Charters, with an engraving of a sailing ship at its centre. It is numbered 1897 and filled in by hand with the details of the voyage and the cargo, the consignment of boxes of earth in which the Count travels. In the novel the ship runs aground at Whitby in a storm with its captain dead at the wheel, and the story of the crossing is told through his log.
Book Ephemera plants a tree for every bookmark it sells and sends its bookmarks out in plastic-free packaging.
How to Care for Your Card Bookmark
Card keeps its edges best when it is kept flat and dry, so leave the bookmark between the pages when the book is closed. Keep it away from steam and damp hands, which can soften the card and lift the ink.
- Material: printed card
