Travertine Stone Soap Dish
An understated soap dish, cut from travertine stone. Its rustic quality looks equally good in the kitchen as it does in the bathroom. Travertine is a natural limestone formed by mineral hot springs, and it has been quarried in Italy for thousands of years, the same stone lines the Colosseum in Rome. Each dish carries the natural pitting and veining typical of travertine, so no two look quite the same, and that variation is part of what makes it a natural stone rather than a manufactured one.
The dish is finished with cork feet on the base, which lift it slightly to let water drain rather than pool, and stop it sliding on a wet sink edge or bath tray. At 10 x 10cm, it is a compact size, enough for a single bar of soap without crowding a small counter.
Travertine is naturally water-resistant, though as with any natural stone, it is worth wiping it dry after use to keep it looking its best over time.
Soap to Sit On It
The dish was chosen with our own Kelvin Apothecary soap range in mind, and the cold-process bars sit on it perfectly: the Bay of Laig bar with rosemary and peppermint, the Glen Etive bar with clary sage and chamomile, the woodsy Àrd Bain bar, and the fennel and sea salt Corryvreckan bar. All are handmade in Scotland at 140g.
It also suits the traditional French bars, including the Marius Fabre olive oil Marseille soap 600g and the boxed 150g bar. Letting a bar dry properly between uses is the single thing that makes it last, which is exactly what the cork feet are for.
