Matsumoto Hoji, a Japanese illustrator of the late 18th century, created frog prints from the Meika Gafu album. His frog prints are known for their minimalist composition, classic ukiyo-e style, and charming subjects. The prints draw on the folkloric symbolism of the frog in Japan, where it represents good luck and prosperity.

Text on the reverse side:

A contemporary French adaptation of a woodblock print from 1814 by Matsumoto Hoji. The Japanese word for frog is “kaeru”, which can also mean “to return”. The frog is considered to bring good luck, representing good things returning.
