This small skeleton is made from wood in Indonesia and painted by hand with candy-skull patterns across every bone. Its limbs are jointed with natural twine, so it moves freely when hung, and it suspends from a tied loop at the top.
The decoration borrows from the calaveras de azúcar of Mexico, the sugar skulls iced in bright colours for Día de Muertos at the start of November. At 18cm long, or 23cm including the string, it suits a window, a doorway or a bare branch.
Each piece is painted by hand, so the colours and patterns vary slightly from one skeleton to the next. It is imported by Siesta, a Canterbury Fair Trade business and a member of BAFTS, the British Association for Fair Trade Shops and Suppliers.
Caring for a Hanging Wooden Ornament
Hang the skeleton where it will not knock repeatedly against glass or a wall, since constant contact chips the paint at the edges. Dust it with a dry cloth or a soft brush. If the twine at the joints loosens or frays over time, it can be replaced with a short length of natural garden twine, tied in the same places.
Material: wood, natural twine, hand-painted
Length: 18cm (23cm with string)
