Catherine Tough Patterned Lambswool Scarf
Catherine Tough studied textiles at the Royal College of Art and has run her studio in Hackney, East London, since graduating in 1999. Pattern and colour sit at the centre of everything she designs, and this scarf carries both: bold squares or a classic check, in colourways chosen to stand out against a dark winter coat.
It is knitted in small batches at a family-run mill in Portugal from 100% merino lambswool spun in Italy. Once knitted, the fabric is gently felted. Felting draws the fibres closer together, giving the scarf a dense, soft handle and a surface that holds its shape through years of wear.
Merino Lambswool Scarf
Lambswool comes from a sheep's first shearing and is finer and softer than wool from older animals. Merino is finer still. Together they make a scarf that sits comfortably at the neck, without the scratch many people associate with wool. Wool also keeps its warmth when the air is damp and breathes when you come indoors, so the scarf can stay on from a cold walk into a warm room.
At 15 by 200 centimetres it is long and narrow. Wrap it twice and tuck the ends in on the coldest days, or loop it once and let the ends fall loose over a coat.
Patterned Wool Scarf Colourways
Three designs are available. Squares in green and pink is the brightest. Squares in dark red and rust is deeper and warmer. The check in navy and bright red is the most classic of the three, and suits men and women equally well.
