The Discovery of a Witch Letterpress Greeting Card is printed in Glasgow by The Passenger Press, on paper milled in the UK, from a 1643 archival print showing a “witch” sailing across the river at Newbury on a plank. The image comes from a pamphlet titled A Most Certain, Strange and True Discovery of a Witch, and a QR code on the back of the card leads to the full story behind it.

The card is part of the Keyhole Collection, for which Rhian Nicholas of The Passenger Press searches library and archive collections for forgotten images, then prints them in small batches on her vintage letterpresses in her studio and shop in Glasgow.

Each run is inked and printed by hand, so the depth of the impression and the strength of the ink vary slightly from card to card. It comes with a brown kraft envelope and makes a good birthday card for a friend with a taste for strange history.

We stock the Keyhole Collection because every card sends the person who receives it off to discover a piece of history they might never otherwise have come across.

Keeping the Impression Crisp

Store the card flat until you send it, as pressure from heavier things on top can flatten the letterpress impression. Once displayed, keep it out of direct sunlight so the ink keeps its colour.
