This flying cat is carved by hand from wood in Bali and painted black, with red-tipped feathered wings and dotted patterning across the body. It is made to hang from a ceiling hook or across a doorway.
In the Scottish Highlands, folklore tells of the cat-sìth, a large black fairy cat with a white mark on its chest. On Samhain, households left out a saucer of milk for it, since a house that did so was said to be blessed and one that did not, cursed.
Every detail, from the face to the feathering on the wings, is painted by hand, so each cat differs a little in its markings. It is imported by Siesta, a family-run Fair Trade business in Canterbury and a member of BAFTS, the British Association for Fair Trade Shops and Suppliers.
Hanging and Caring for the Flying Cat
Hang the cat from a secure hook, away from doors that might swing into it, since the carved wings are its most exposed part. Dust it with a soft brush, working along the feathers, and keep it out of strong sunlight, which will fade the red over time. A dry room suits it best, because damp can raise the grain beneath the paint.
Material: wood, hand-painted
Made in: Bali, Indonesia
