Masami in red is a skinny silk scarf from Les Belles Vagabondes, 8 x 150cm. Françoise takes her inspiration from travel, exhibitions, artists and landscapes, and every design begins as a drawing rather than a digital file.

The length suits it to the hair, the neck, a belt, a wrist, or the handle of a bag.

How the Printing Works

The brand has chosen traditional screen printing, which takes time and rare expertise. A stencil of micro-perforated fabric is stretched over a flat frame, and each colour in the design is pushed through on its own pass, the layers superimposed. Colours are mixed in the workshop from powdered dyes and natural gums, with more than 500 shades available.

The silk is printed on tables running to 36 metres, then cut and finished by hand.

How This Scarf Is Made

The printing workshop is a member of SEDEX, the Supplier Ethical Data Exchange, and is audited under the SMETA framework, which assesses labour rights, health and safety, environmental practice and business ethics. The dyes are AZO-free, with no heavy metals or hazardous chemicals. Les Belles Vagabondes use no synthetic fibres.

How to Care for Your Silk
