Red Sakura is a mini scarf from Les Belles Vagabondes, 50 x 50cm of pure silk with a hand-rolled hem. Françoise draws her designs from travel, exhibitions, artists and landscapes, and each begins as a pencil sketch before being refined in ink and separated out for printing.
Worn at the neck, on a wrist, in the hair, or tied to a bag.
How the Printing Works
Screen printing in the traditional Indian manner needs one frame per colour. A micro-perforated stencil is stretched over a flat frame and each colour pushed through separately, layer upon layer. The reds and every other shade are mixed on site from powdered dyes and natural gums, from a working palette of more than 500 colours.
Printing takes place on tables running 24 to 36 metres. The scarves are then cut by hand and hemmed in the French style.
How This Scarf Is Made
The workshop is a SEDEX member, audited under the SMETA framework, which assesses labour rights, health and safety, environmental practice and business ethics across the supply chain. The dyes are AZO-free and free of heavy metals and hazardous chemicals. The brand uses only silk, wool and organic cotton.
How to Care for Your Silk
Hand wash cool with a gentle detergent, or dry clean. Do not wring. Roll it in a towel to draw out the water, then dry away from direct heat and sunlight.
