Two angels with trumpets are cut from tin and painted by hand in Mexico for this decoration, supplied by Sedona Spirit, who have worked with folk artists since 1988.
Mexican tinwork, called hojalata, grew up in the colonial period as a cheaper alternative to silver for church ornaments, and the city of Oaxaca remains one of its centres. Craftsmen cut the shapes from sheet tin, punch and emboss the detail from the back, and then paint the surface.
Angels sounding trumpets are the herald angels of the nativity story, which makes this pair a natural piece for Christmas, and it hangs as well on a wall through the rest of the year.
Caring for Mexican Tinwork
Tin will rust if it is left damp, so keep the angels indoors and dust them with a dry cloth. The painted edges are thin and can chip, so hang them where they will not knock against a wall or a door.
Material: tin, hand-painted
Made in: Mexico
