The Witchfinder General Greeting Card is printed in Glasgow by The Passenger Press, on 350gsm paper milled in the UK, using the woodcut from Matthew Hopkins's 1647 book The Discovery of Witches, a copy of which is held in the University of Glasgow's Special Collections. Hopkins styled himself the “Witchfinder General” during the English witch hunts of the 1640s, and his book is a grim record of that time.
The card is part of the Keyhole Collection, and a QR code on the back leads to the history behind the image. Rhian Nicholas prints each batch by hand on her vintage letterpresses in her studio and shop in Glasgow.
Hand-inking means each card varies slightly in the depth and strength of its print. It comes with a brown kraft envelope and suits Halloween, a birthday for a history lover, or anyone with a taste for the darker corners of the past.
We stock it because it carries a seventeenth-century woodcut out of a university library and into the hands of people who would never otherwise see it.
Displaying Your Card
A spot away from bright windows will keep the black ink from greying over time. Until it is sent, keep it flat in its envelope so the corners don't bend.
